Video game giant Ubisoft reportedly exploring blockchain potential

French video game giant Ubisoft is considering introducing blockchain to its games, Cointelegraph writes. Ubisoft has been allegedly working on a blockchain solution for months and is considering one implementation—monetisation of in-game items put on a blockchain.

In-game collectibles are a common feature in many games. Epic Games’ Fortnite has monetised in-game equipment; while the game itself is free, players need to pay for additional content. Reportedly, Ubisoft is planning to use a similar strategy, putting the collectibles on a blockchain so that gamers preserve their property rights. According to an anonymous source, the company may use the Ethereum blockchain.

“When you buy a costume on Fortnite, your investment is lost, the accessory is locked in the game. If we use the blockchain, we give a physical existence to a digital element,” an unnamed source told French publication Les Échos.

At the moment, it is not certain whether Ubisoft is planning to launch a new game with blockchain collectibles or add them to an existing franchise.
