When I was growing up, my father would always tell me that there’s no such thing as a free lunch and then I would go to the supermarket and eat free samples and feel incredibly confused.
It’s worth drawing the line between free samples at a supermarket and, say, Facebook’s business model.
Facebook does not charge its users an explicit fee but it does collect copious amounts of user data and sell that data to the Russian government and some, I assume, good nations indirectly via its advertising service. So as a user of Facebook you get a free lunch but you also get things like election meddling and, I guess depending on where you sit on the political spectrum, you might consider that to be an expensive lunch!
