Starting today there is an easy way to buy Monero coin (XMR) coin offline, locally, wherever you are. There is a website that matches buyers and sellers together and lets them exchange Monero for cash or whatever other local payment methods there exist (yandex money anyone?). Pretty neat eh?
…wait that’s LocalBitcoins.Com?
Yeah, exactly, the site is called LocalMonero.Co and it’s basically a LocalBitcoins.Com but for Monero. The website is basically a huge pool of classified ads with poster ratings and a security escrow-like system at play. Except it’s brand new so there are not too many ads on it …yet.
The creators of LocalMonero.Co are from Hong Kong and they emphacise their focus on privacy in the announcement Reddit thread:
We are committed to your security and privacy. We don’t keep any IP logs and we don’t require users to have emails. We keep trade chat logs for 180 days for purposes of dispute mediation. The logs are encrypted and all the attachments uploaded in the chat are watermarked and encrypted to prevent unauthorized use. Unfortunately (trust me, we hate it as much as you do), we do use Google APIs for geocoding (because theirs are the only ones that don’t suck as far as we know) but we respect that some of our users will want to block Google, so for them we’ve provided the ability to input their latitude and longitude manually (used when searching for local trades near you).
All in all this website looks like a great way to buy Monero coins for cash or other exotic payment methods in the future. In addition, the anonymous nature of the site will allow another entry point into cryptocurrency for anyone willing to stay undisclosed.
